A talk with
JOÃO SANTOS
Q: What does life in Lisbon mean to you?
A: Life in Lisbon is a full circle journey. I grew up here, soaking up the city’s natural charm and energy. After spending seven years in France, coming back meant rediscovering Lisbon’s artistic soul through a more mature lens. It’s that perfect blend of nostalgia and fresh inspiration where my past meets my present.
Q: How does the city inspire your vibe and style?
A: Lisbon is all about contrasts. The timeless beauty of its old architecture stands side by side with a cutting-edge creative scene. My style reflects that mix – rooted in classic elements but reimagined with minimal and modern twists.
Q: As a DJ, how does music influence your personal style and creativity?
A: Music is all about telling stories and sharing raw energy. The same goes for my wardrobe. I put together my sets like I build an outfit – every piece matters. I blend timeless tracks with modern beats, just as I mix vintage pieces with new twists in my look.
Q: How do you define community, and how does it show up in the Lisbon scene?
A: Community for me means shared passion and real respect. In Lisbon, I see it in underground art and music spaces where people unite to celebrate individuality and creativity. Whether it’s DJs backing each other up or indie brands throwing together unique events, the vibe is all about collaboration.
Q: What’s your ultimate style hack for staying fresh on Lisbon’s streets?
A: Shoes say it all. I always kick off any look with the perfect pair – Chelsea boots are my top pick. They ground the outfit and give it that instant cool factor. Once the boots are in place, everything else just flows.
Q: How does style reflect your personal identity?
A: My style is my silent statement. It tells my story without a word. I stick to monochrome tones, discreet accessories and timeless pieces because I value substance over flash. It’s all about keeping it real while making a quiet impact.
Q: Do you believe fashion brings people together? How does it build connections?
A: Absolutely. When a piece of clothing reflects genuine values, it sparks a conversation. Real fashion connects people through shared ideals, unlike fast fashion which turns creativity into disposable trends.
Q: What’s that one piece in your wardrobe you can’t live without, and why?
A: Without a doubt, it’s my Chelsea boots. They form the foundation of my look, versatile and ready for anything – from chill sessions to gigs. I also dig my black Vans sneakers for those laid-back days.
Q: What’s your favourite mantra to stay grounded and inspired?
A: I’m big on Fernando Pessoa’s words:"The value of things is not in the time they last but in the intensity with which they occur. That is why there are unforgettable moments, unexplainable things and incomparable people."I also live by “Trust the process.” It reminds me to embrace the journey – whether I’m mixing tracks, building my brand or evolving my style. Patience and persistence always pay off.
Q: Describe the perfect outfit for a first date. What makes it click
A: For a first date, I always start with boots. They set the tone. I throw on a long coat to add a bit of mystery and keep the base simple with a clean T-shirt or classic shirt. It’s all about letting the boots lead the look.
Q: What’s your go-to move for elevating a simple look?
A: A touch of discreet silver jewellery – a ring or a necklace – is my secret weapon. It adds just enough character without overdoing it, tying the whole outfit together.
Q: What’s a Lisbon gem everyone should experience at least once?
A: You’ve got to check out Monsanto. It’s often overlooked but is like the lungs of Lisbon, offering a killer panoramic view of the city. It’s a stunning, vibrant spot perfect for a moment of reflection.
Q: If Lisbon were a colour palette, what shades would represent it?
A: I’d say terracotta orange for the rooftops, deep blue for the river, sunny yellow for the light and a crisp mix of white and blue for the iconic tiles.
Q: How do you balance looking good with keeping it practical day to day?
A: I stick to versatile, timeless pieces that work in any scene. Chelsea boots are the ultimate – they carry me through both laid-back hangs and more polished gigs, proving that style and practicality can ride together.
Q: What’s a style red flag everyone should avoid?
A: Stay away from flashy logos and over-branding. They shout for attention in all the wrong ways. Subtle, unbranded pieces and discreet accessories speak volumes without yelling.
Q: If you could only pick one piece from CIARAN’s first drop to wear on repeat, which would it be and why?
A: I’d go for the black T-shirt with the discreet logo. It’s understated and versatile, perfectly in tune with my monochrome vibe and love for subtle, meaningful design.
